Former FDNY firefighter George Duignan dies at 73

Rockville Centre resident George J. Duignan died on March 9. He was 73.

Duignan was raised on West 10th Street in the village. He was a proud graduate of Power Memorial and Iona College, and a lifelong ticket holder and fan of the Iona Gaels.

After graduating college, Duignan worked for the FBI. He then joined the FDNY and was assigned to Engine 9 Ladder 6 “The Dragonfighters,” where he spent his entire 31-year career. He continued his education and earned several master’s degrees, became a stockbroker, a certified financial planner and an enrolled agent of the Internal Revenue Service. 

During his career, Duignan loved all of his clients and will be missed by many. He continued to work up until late in his life.

Duignan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Patricia; his siblings, Maryann McDermott, Thomas (Inga) and John; his in-laws, Nora Furey (the late James), William Smart (Lauren) and Kathy Duignan; his nephews and nieces, John (Katie), Tara (Sean), Kristyen (Michael), Gina, the late JT, Thomas and the late Michael Furey; his great-nephews and great-nieces, Benjamin, Adam, Desmond, Damien, Meghann, Emma, Madeline, Anna Rose, Grace, James, Michel and Olivia.

His wake was on March 12 and 13 at Flinch & Bruns Funeral Home in Lynbrook. His funeral Mass was on March 14 at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Malverne. He was buried at Holy Rood Cemetery, in Westbury. Memorial contributions can be made to the New York Firefighters Burn Center at nyffburncenter.com.
