South Side High School Valedictorian Maria Passarelli and Salutatorian Deana Davoudiasl addressed peers, parents, family members and Rockville Centre School District personnel at the 120th annual graduation ceremony at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex on June 24.

Seizing the moment, the top two graduates stressed, would propel the outgoing senior class into the future as its members said goodbye to South Side one last time.

“We made it!” Davoudiasl proclaimed during her speech. “We have studied papers, turned in papers, written papers and in the end we will receive a single slip of paper — our diploma. It’s now our turn to take our potential and achieve excellence.”

“It’s now or never,” Passarelli said. “Choices can be scary, leading us to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. We’ve already faced and made the right choices, and as we leave South Side we’re ready for those that lie ahead.”

Totaling 278 students, the class of 2011 was recognized for its hard work and commitment over the past four years. Principal Dr. Carol Burris described the class as a “distinguished and accomplished” bunch that still has a lot to achieve.

The Centennial Award for School and Community, presented by South Side Alumni Association President Andrew Krouss, went to Student Government Association President Kevin Remy. Remy, who spoke at the start of the ceremony, had high praise for his fellow seniors, calling them “a class of scientists, creative artists, musicians and writers … a class that will make an impact on this world and that will save lives and entertain the world with their gifts.”

Kelly Kirk and Robert Griggs shared the Dr. Richard S. Byers School and Community Service Award, presented by Burris. Schools Superintendent Dr. William Johnson later called Class President Brendan Principato and Davoudiasl to the stage to present them with the Laurel awards, recognizing the two seniors most involved in extracurricular activities.
