Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre hosted Holocaust Remembrance Day event

To commemorate Holocaust Remembrance Day, guests were welcome to listen to a musical composition and watch an informative documentary about the genocide at the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre on Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Eleanor Feingold, a congregant at the synagogue, performed “Death and Renewal,” a biblically inspired musical piece that she composed herself. The commemoration event continued with a screening of “One Survivor Remembers,” which told the story of Gerda Weissman Klein.

“At a time when Neo-Nazis march in American streets, anti-Semitic acts are the most frequently committed hate crimes in America and Holocaust deniers have growing legitimacy, we forget the Holocaust at our own peril,” said Rabbi Andrew Warmflash. “As George Santayana taught us, ‘Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.’”

Temple Am Echad in Lynbrook will host a Holocaust commemoration event later in the year for Yom HaShoah, the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Day, which falls on May 1 this year.
