How to beat the Long Island heat: PSEG has some advice

Posted

With extreme heat forecasted for the next few days, PSEG Long Island officials say there is sufficient electric capacity to meet the projected peak demand for customers.

The National Weather Service has a heat advisory is in effect for Long Island and the Rockaways for Thursday through Saturday as the heat index may approach or exceed 100 degrees in certain areas accompanied with the possibility of thunderstorms.

PSEG Long Island will provide additional personnel to address any heat-related power outages as quickly and safely as possible.

If crews are working nearby, customers are urged to remain in their homes to ensure the safety of both customers and crew members.

“To provide customers with safe, reliable electric service, we have been upgrading equipment, carefully planning to provide sufficient electric capacity to meet peak demand, and positioning our personnel to respond effectively if needed,”  Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of electric operations, said in a news release.

During extreme heat conditions, customers are urged to seek out air-conditioned spaces, stay hydrated while avoiding alcohol or caffeine, avoid wearing dark colors, ensure no children or pets are left alone in enclosed vehicles, and avoid exercise during hours of intense heat.

During times of high temperatures and high energy use, PSEG Long Island recommends several tips to help save money and energy.

First, do not cool an empty house and ensure that holes and cracks around doors and windows are sealed.

Replacing air filters, utilizing ceiling fans, and operating appliances in the morning or evening can also help in the coming days.
