In honor of all our wonderful mothers

Posted

Although Mother’s Day is not a Jewish holiday and the Torah commands us to honor our mothers every day, as long as we continually show our love and appreciation to our moms throughout the year and remember that in Judaism, “every day is Mother’s Day,” we can and should honor our dear mothers on our national holiday of Mother’s Day. And now, more than ever, because of our lockdowns, we see firsthand (even though we already knew), just how much of superheroes moms really are.

While we had to adjust to our online classes and not leaving our homes, moms everywhere had their own adjustments to make. Although moms usually keep the show running at home, with the whole family home  all the time  and with little or no help, that already impossible job became even harder! Moms are cooking more meals than ever, disinfecting surfaces all day long, entertaining the children, homeschooling, housecleaning to no end, and in many cases, working from home too. I know my mom spends half a day just sanitizing groceries and packages.

So with Mother’s Day approaching, let us extend our deepest appreciation and gratitude to our moms, who are doing everything they can to: keep the house running, make sure their families have everything they need and of course, most importantly, keep their families safe. So, while we recognize doctors, nurses, first responders, grocery employees, all delivery services and countless others for all their dedication and sacrifices, let us add “mothers” to this group of heroes.

And although this year will be different from traditional Mother’s Day celebrations, and the big family brunch will have to wait until next year, there are plenty of ways to show love and appreciation to moms this year. Although gifts are nice, might I suggest an even more special way to express our love to moms.

How about giving mom the day off! Let her sleep late. Cook her favorite breakfast (this will only be helpful if you also wash all the dishes and clean up any messes). Clean the house a bit. Younger ones can do something smaller like make the beds and even just pick up after themselves. Whatever you do, let us all appreciate our mothers for all that they do, during these challenging times and always. Happy Mother’s Day to all moms!
