Incumbents unchallenged in North Merrick

North Merrick Board of Education trustees Jonathan Butler and Dr. Matthew Kuschner are running for re-election unopposed this year.

Trustees serve three-year terms.

Butler and his wife, Cheryl, have lived in North Merrick for 28 years; they have two grown children. Butler has been a North Merrick board trustee since 1996, and has also served on the special education, school/community relations and finance committees.

Butler taught for 31 years in New York City schools before retiring. He holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s in special education and a professional diploma in educational administration.

Butler is a member of the North Merrick Special Education PTA, the Camp Avenue, Fayette and Old Mill Road PTAs, as well as the Merrick Avenue and Calhoun High School PTAs. He is also a member of the Community Wellness Council and served as president of the Kiwanis Club of Merrick.

Kuschner has been a member of the North Merrick Board of Education for the past 14 years, and has lived in Merrick for 38 years. He and his wife, Sheila, have three sons, Jarred, Billy and Alex.

Kuschner has also served as a board member to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District for the past six years. He is a retired chiropractor who currently works for Travelers Insurance as a medical investigator. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Bellmore-Merrick Wellness Council, the Policy Board of the North Merrick Teachers Center and is an active member of the Camp Avenue PTA.

The public vote will take place on Tuesday, May 17, from 2 to 10 p.m. at Fayette Elementary School on Merrick Ave. To be eligible to vote, one must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen and a district resident for at least 30 days prior to the vote.
