For Christina DeCicco, originally of Island Park, acting and singing came naturally. From a young age, she was performing in musicals and plays, both in school and in her community. Now, after regional and national tours, she has made her way back to New York, and is currently starring as Cindy Lou in the off-Broadway play “The Marvelous Wonderettes.”

“I definitely was not the athlete of the family,” DeCicco said, recalling her elementary and high school theater performances. Her interest in performing began in third grade, when DeCicco began singing in the school choir at Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School. “I remember I got a solo and I was so excited,” she said.

In middle and high-school, DeCicco said, theater was the place to be – “all the young, cool teachers were doing the plays.” In seventh grade at Lincoln Orens Middle School, DeCicco got the role of Ellie Greenwich in “Leader of the Pack,” singing some of the songs she now performs every night with the rest of the Wonderettes.

But DeCicco's early career was not without its small disappointments. In her senior year, she was hoping to get the role of Adelaide, the female lead in “Guys and Dolls,” in West Hempstead High School's production of the musical. Instead, she was cast as Nicely-Nicely Johnson, a male gambler. But despite the upset, DeCicco said she had a great time with her cast mates, with the pictures to prove it.

After high school, DeCicco went on to Wagner College, a small, liberal arts school on Staten Island, where she was able to hone her craft. Besides having the opportunity to play many different roles, DeCicco said she got a hands-on education in everything from rigging lights and building sets to doing makeup and hair. “We were immersed in theatre,” she explained, adding that she had the opportunity to do something different for each performance.
