Malverne High School blood drive

There were so many students and staff members lining up to donate at Malverne High School’s annual blood drive last month that the school had to extend its hours to accommodate all the donors. In the end, the blood drive, which was organized by the Key and Art of Leadership clubs, netted 45 pints of blood for area blood banks, helping to fill a critical need during the busy holiday season.

Maurice W. Downing food drive

Students at Malverne’s Maurice W. Downing Primary School were proud to collect approximately 300 nonperishable food items to make the holidays brighter for members of their school community. The annual drive was organized by kindergarten teacher James Cornwell and school social worker Jamie Carter-Jorif. Student Council representatives in the K-2 school made posters, which they hung throughout the school to remind their classmates to bring in food.

Howard T. Herber's Immigration Extravaganza

Just prior to winter break, eighth-graders at the Howard T. Herber Middle School held their annual Immigration Extravaganza.

In small groups they did in-depth research on the cultures and contributions of immigrants who came to the U.S. between 1800 and now.

Students brought their findings on the various cultures to life using props, dressing the part and bringing in food from the country of origin. All middle school students were urged to visit the exhibits and travel through time with their peers.
