Kitten found in garbage can

A kitten was found barely alive at the bottom of a garbage can on Nassau Lane in Island Park.

According to Gary Rogers, spokesperson for the Nassau County SPCA, the kitten was discovered by village sanitation workers on Oct. 27.

"If they didn’t notice it, it would have been compacted into the garbage," said Rogers. "So thank god the garbage men saw the kitten."

According to Rogers, the kitten had a low pulse rate, shallow breathing and would not have survived long.

The kitten was taken to an animal hospital in Massapequa, where its condition has since improved. It will eventually be available for adoption.

Nassau County SPCA is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible. Anyone with information can call 516-THE-SPCA; all calls will be kept confidential.
