Lady Jets post record-setting run

East Meadow’s 4 x 100 meter relay team turned some heads at the Nassau County girls’ Class AAA track and field championships held at Mitchel Athletic Complex.

The Lady Jets not only blazed their way to a county title with a time of 0:48.9, they did so in record-setting fashion, shaving nearly two seconds off the previous school mark (50.6). Senior Kasey Lesner ran the first leg followed by senior Cassandra Jean, junior Elisa Torres and senior Tiffany Goodwin.

“All four ran out of their skin,” coach Steve Josepher said. “The adrenaline must have been pumping and they ran unconscious.”

Goodwin also won the county title in the 100 dash (12.5) and finished third in the shot put (34-feet, 11.5-inches), while senior Michelle Beganskas took home top honors in the discus (112-9). Beganskas also qualified for the state meet last weekend at Vestal High School but failed to make the finals.

Senior Jen Flores and a trio of freshmen—Karissa Stankes, Stephanie Fretitta and Brittany Cutler—teamed up to take first in the 4 x 800 relay at the Division 1B championships at Herricks High School. Sophomores Jen Flores and Shainna Belocura earned All-Division honors in the 100 High Hurdles, while senior Valerie Sanders outdistanced the pack in the 3,000. With Goodwin maxed out in three events, freshman Alyssa Roberts jumped into the 4 x 100 and helped Lesner, Jean and Torres earn a division title. Junior Michelle Steinberg won the pole vault, freshman Chanice Cross was third in the high jump and freshman Caitlin Langan took third in the triple jump.
