The Lakeview NAACP held its 25th annual Freedom Fund Gala — its largest fundraising event — last week to celebrate its success and continued growth in the community.

The gala, according to Bea Bayley, president of Lakeview chapter, helps the organization support its numerous programs and mailings. “We can be a benefit to our community through the funds that we receive,” she said, “and that’s our goal: to increase programming, educational things, getting out the vote.”

The Lakeview chapter, which has 239 members, was formed in the mid-1950s. This year, members of the Malverne High School chorus performed at the opening of the gala, which took place on Oct. 28 at the Marriott Hotel in Uniondale. The NAACP’s honorees this year were:

  • Cherry Weinstein, an administrative assistant who received the President’s Award
  • Nassau County Legislator Robert Troiano and attorney Heather Palmore, who both received an award for distinguished service
  • The Rev. Walter Hodges and Lakeview Fire Department Assistant Chief Heather Senti, who were recognized for their community service
  • Lakeview Public Library librarian Ruby Boykins, who was recognized for her work
  • Blossom Martindale, who was honored for her work as a mentor with 1st Things 1st
  • Howard T. Herber Middle School teacher Kenneth Smith, who was honored for his work in education
  • Cinthia Thorp, a fourth grade teacher at Davison Avenue, received the education award
  • Meilani Montgomery, a student recognized for her efforts
  • Darryl Singleton, also a student honored for his commitment to learning
