The Long Beach Police Department is seeking the identity of a man responsible for criminal mischief to a bicycle in the West End after private security cameras captured footage of the individual damaging the bike.

The incident took place on April 16 between 4 p.m. and 1 a.m. the next morning at West Beech and New Hampshire streets, where the bicycle was tied to a fence post, police said. There did not appear to be a motive to the destruction of property, they added.

Police say the offense was a crime and if found for criminal mischief to a bicycle — a misdemeanor — the man could face up to a year in jail and a $500 fine. Photos of the man were posted to the LBPD’s Facebook page on May 9 as the investigation into his identity continues.

“We have been very aggressive in identifying all kinds of video sources whether it’s on a house or a business; we also are embarking on a video surveillance campaign…” Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney said. “When we do get video, that coupled with the latest social media is community policing at its finest, so we are utilizing these images and getting them out on the social media so that the community can help us identify people that commit crimes.”

The Facebook post encouraged anyone with information to contact the Long Beach Detective Division at (516) 705-7320. Confidential and anonymous tips can also be provided by calling (516) 705-7370 or via email at tips@lbpd.com.
