L.B.'s Scott wins state high jump title

For a third year in a row, a member of Long Beach’s boys’ track and field program made more than a little bit of noise at the state level. Junior Tyquan Scott captured the Division I New York State and Federation High Jump titles, clearing the bar at 6-feet, 7-inches, on June 8 in Middletown.

“Tyquan was very relaxed and calm, and I think that’s why he was so successful,” Marines coach Greg Milone said. “I’m really excited for him. He was seeded third, so it’s not like he came out of nowhere. But it was a wide-open competition and he stepped up like he’s done each week.”

The field for the High Jump was about 25 athletes deep, Milone said. Scott, who won the event at the State Qualifier meet in May after finishing second in Nassau Class AAA, cleared each of his first five attempts and tied a personal best with the winning jump.

“Athletically, the sky’s the limit for him,” Milone said. “He’s a competitive kid and wants to do the best he can and win. He has the potential to repeat and reach seven feet.”

It’s the second time in three years Long Beach crowned a state champion. Josh Trone won the state 100-meter dash title in the spring of 2011. Last year, David Henry was second in the state in the Triple Jump.
