There are sanitation initiatives, curbside recycling, special recycling programs, electronics recycling as part of the e-cycling program, composting and rain barrel initiatives available from the Town of Hempstead according to Environmental education and community outreach office services assistant Danielle Nicole Annarella. On Mar. 10, Annarella gave the Island Park Business and Residential Chamber of Commerce a hands-on demonstration of the recycling process, and the ways residents can make a difference recycling in the community.

“I bought a rain barrel and compost, recycled materials like tee shirts and carpets, made from water bottles, pencils made from recycled news papers and a piece of playground base made from recycled tires. I also gave out celebrate the earth coloring books,” Annarella said.

The town sells materials and containers for composting and rain barrels at the Oceanside transfer station opposite the power plant on Austin Boulevard, next to Peter’s Clam Bar.

Annarella’s office is there and they run the town’s composting and landscaping area there.

Annarella explained the rain barrels have a spigot and the water can be used to water a lawn or clean off a driveway without costing anything.
