Students offer assistance to the homeless, Sandy victims

Students at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick lent helping hands to a good cause last Thursday, when in two hours’ time, they made 1,430 sandwiches for homeless people and Hurricane Sandy victims.

Eighty Levy-Lakeside sixth-graders took part in the sandwich-making effort. They used ingredients donated by parents as well as John Moore’s Deli & Caterers, at 2687 Merrick Road in Bellmore. The students also bagged about 40 pounds of cookies donated by Dortoni Bakery, at 3264 Hempstead Turnpike in Levittown.

“Giving back is an important part of our children’s education,” said Sue Molloy, a sixth-grade teacher at Levy-Lakeside.
