Little people, big check

Barnum Woods Elementary School’s student council presented the March of Dimes with a check for $650 to support their campaign for healthier babies on Dec. 14.

The mission of the March of Dimes, a national nonprofit, is to end prematurity and help families have full-term, healthy babies. The organization supports research of the problems that threaten children and aims to find ways to prevent them.

During the last week of October, members of the fourth and fifth grade student council informed classes in the East Meadow school about the campaign and explained that all proceeds from their fundraiser would help premature babies have fighting chances for survival.

For one dollar, students, faculty and administrators purchased pumpkins and wrote small messages on them. The pumpkins were then displayed around the building, located at 500 May Lane.

March of Dimes representative Donna Kontje visited the school last week to accept the donation.
