An off-duty NYPD officer from Valley Stream was killed early on Sunday when he got out of his car after colliding with another vehicle on the New Jersey Turnpike and was struck by a passing vehicle, New Jersey State Police said.

Troopers responded to the scene of the incident at 3 a.m. on Sunday in Elizabeth, N.J. Vincent Harrison, 25, sustained “severe bodily injuries,” police said, and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:28 a.m. No other injuries were reported.

According to police, Harrison was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze in the right center lane of the Turnpike when he changed lanes and was involved in a crash with a 2003 Ford Escape.

Harrison stopped in the right shoulder, and the Ford stopped in the right center lane. Harrison got out of his car and was struck by an Infiniti, which stopped briefly and then left the scene before police arrived.

According to New Jersey State Police, the driver of the Infiniti was apprehended and Union County prosecutors are determining what to charge the suspect with. The investigation into what caused the incident is ongoing.

Harrison was a member of the 100th Precinct in Queens since 2014. The precinct’s Twitter account sent a tweet on Sunday morning: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of one of our own. May you rest in peace P.O. Vincent Harrison.”
