The next meeting of the West End Neighbors Civic Association will be at 7 p.m. on May 26 at the West End Community Center on Maryland Avenue. 
Farmers market returns
The Farmers Market will have its season opening in Kennedy Plaza, outside Long Beach City Hall. The market will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays until November. In addition to fresh fruit, vegetables, juices, organic bread and fish that we all enjoyed last year, market vendors will offer glass bottled milk and other dairy products, hand made body care soaps and lotions. Learn to cope
The declining economy, high unemployment and diminished savings has many people experiencing anxiety or depression for the first time in their lives. It’s understandable given that we’re living in a recession that has lasted more than a year and shows limited signs of improvement. To help individuals understand the emotional impact of these changes and learn effective coping strategies and treatments, Long Beach Medical Center is offering free, confidential anxiety and depression screenings every Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. For information call 897-1270. 
VFW anniversary party
The Long Beach Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post 1384 will celebrate their 75th anniversary on June 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Long Beach VFW Hall on West Park Avenue. Please join them for a fun evening of food, open bar and music by Sal Vivo and Friends performing the best of classic rock-n-roll. Art class
The Long Beach Art League is offering a course in chiaroscuro painting, given by Demerah Campbell, on May 15 and 22nd at 9:30 a.m. at the Long Beach Community Center, at 650 Magnolia Blvd. Registration is required. Call Betty Barto at 992-1791. Materials with be provided for $10.
Calling artists, photographers
and musicians
Visual artists and photographers are wanted for “Art in the Plaza,” scheduled to be held in Kennedy Plaza outside City Hall on Sundays from May 16 to Nov. 14. This new initiative partners all of the local Long Beach arts organizations and will provide their members with the opportunity to exhibit and sell their art. Musicians will have an opportunity to perform in a public venue and sell their CD's and merchandise. For further information and exhibit updates, contact Scott Evers at www.artintheplaza.weebly.com. Yoga on the beach
Nickerson Beach Park will host yoga classes in June. Registration for the classes have started on a first-come, first-serve basis until the class is filled or until it begins on June 1. The one-hour class will be held on three successive Tuesdays on June 1, 8 and 15 at 10 a.m. on the beach or inside in the event of rain. The fee for the classes is $18 plus parking. Guns for dollars
The City of Long Beach, Nassau County District Attorney’s Office and the Christian Light Baptist Church will hold a gun buy-back program from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 15 at the church, located at 620 Rev. J.J. Evans Blvd. in Long Beach. For information call 432-7477.

Golf outing
Long Beach Catholic Regional School will hold their 10th annual golf outing at the Hempstead Country Club, at 60 Front St. in Hempstead, on May 17. Artists wanted for fine arts show
The City of Long Beach is preparing for its 16th annual Fine Arts Show, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday June 12 and13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Kennedy Plaza. The art committee invites artists to present and sell their work, including oils, acrylics, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, drawings, prints, sculpture and photography. Crafts and jewelry will not be accepted. A single space (10x15) costs $150 for the two-day event. For information call 431-1000.
Soup kitchen needs volunteers

Atlantic City trip
The Avanti Society is organizing a trip to the Showboat Casino in Atlantic City on Aug. 4. The cost is $30 a person with a $20 coin return. Seats are limited. For information call 889-5086.

Opera performance
The Avanti Society presents operatic singer Rinaldo Toglia, who will perform arias and broadway melodies on May 16 at 2 p.m.
Blood pressure screening
The library will hold a free blood pressure screening from 12 to 2 p.m. on May 13.
Playing piano cords
The Frank Suarez method of chord construction for piano is a new and unique way of teaching chords. Suarez was a piano instructor at the Port Washington and Long Beach Adult Education system. His workshop will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 13.
Play about HIV
The Christian Light Missionary Baptist Church and the Kambe Theatre present the play “One Week” at 7 p.m. on May 14. This play, directed by Wendy Guzman, is about a soon-to-be groom who learns that he may have contracted HIV. Waiting seven days for the test results turns out to be the most hectic week of his life.
Architecture exhibit
The Long Beach Island Landmarks Association presents “The Architecture of Long Beach Island” on May 15 at 2 p.m. Alexandra Karafinas invites you to view the architectural styles of the homes and buildings of Point Lookout, Lido Beach and Atlantic Beach. A video presentation by Barry Rivadue will be shown.

Open jazz jam

Long Beach seniors can improve their drawing skills with supportive instructor Marilyn Kestin on at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesdays in April.

Exercise classes
The Rec is offering two adult courses this spring, a yoga/pilates class and a boot camp will be held in the Teen Center (above the Ice Arena) on weekday evenings and weekend mornings. Registration is at the Rec’s swimming pool, at Magnolia Boulevard and West Bay Drive. The fee is $50 for Long Beach residents; $100 for non-residents.
City Managers race
The Rec will sponsor the 34th annual City Managers10-Mile Trophy Run, “A Salute to Our Veterans,” on May 30 at 8 a.m. Early registration fee is $20 before May 28 at 5 p.m. at therecreation center on Magnolia Boulevard at West Bay Drive. Late registration will be at the Long Beach Community Center, at 650 Magnolia Blvd., next to the Recreation Center beginning at 6:30 a.m. You can also register online at www.active.com.
