Long Beach High School student Christopher Cuzzo died on July 6 by unknown causes. He would have been a senior in September.

“We lost a 16-year-old on Friday, July 6, at 6 a.m.,” said Sgt. Eric Cregeen, a spokesman for the Long Beach Police Department. “We got a call for an unresponsive male and he was pronounced [dead] at the hospital.”

“The Long Beach School District is deeply saddened at the loss of one of our high school students,” read a statement on the Long Beach School District’s website. “We extend our sympathies and condolences to his family and friends during this difficult time, and our counselors are on hand to help any students and staff with grief brought on by this tragedy.”

School counselors will be available throughout the summer and can be reached through the school district’s PPS office at 516-897-2200 to schedule an appointment.

Officials are still investigating the cause of death.

“Until the medical examiner is done conducting their investigation, it’s still under investigation,” Cregeen said.

Cuzzo was a member of the Civil Air Patrol Squadron 288.

Caolan Joy of Wantagh wrote on the Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home website, “I knew him as a great leader and chief in civil air patrol squadron 288. He will always be missed.”

Jared Del Orfano of Merrick wrote, “Chief Cuzzo and I were squadron mates in the Civil Air Patrol. He was a great guy, very funny and nice. I am shocked to hear the tragic news. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Cuzzo family. The squadron [will] be different without him.”

A funeral mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Mary of the isle Roman catholic Church in Long Beach. The funeral followed at the St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.
