Thanks for the inspiring article

To the Editor:

“Celebrating a transplant milestone” (April 22-28) was a great, uplifting article. And thanks to the courage of Liz Stark and the dedication of the medical field professionals for ever-increasing life-saving and life-prolonging innovations. Bravo! We should all be grateful to them and think about what you might do with an extra 10 years of a better quality of life.

Ford should oppose casino

To the Editor:

I'm wondering what County Executive Mangano is thinking (“A casino in the cards for the Coliseum?,” May 6-12). Once again another politician groping at straws in an attempt to close a budget shortfall, by embracing a gambling casino as its cure. I don't want a casino in Nassau County; that cheapens where I live. The casino is an idea that will increase crime, make going to see a family show at the coliseum a nightmare, will increase traffic in an already overloaded area and increase pollution.

We need Legislator Denise Ford to break her silence on this issue now. We need her to take a firm position in opposition to the casino proposal.

Street safety goes both ways

To the Editor:

With the warm weather here, I’ve seen a number of bicyclists on the roads. When cars and bikes share the road, courtesy is a two-way street.

Cyclists have as much responsibility to share the road as motorists. I occasionally hear cyclists complain about the actions of motorists, but I’ve also seen some cyclists blow through stop signs and red lights.

I see cyclists riding side-by-side when the road is safe for it. It’s a two-way street. If you want motorists to respect your right to be on the road, then you have to respect the rules of the road and respect the safety of motorists.

There’s no law that requires cyclists to ride single file, but cyclists are not allowed to impede the flow of traffic. Riding two abreast impedes the flow of traffic and puts motorists at risk. Motorists are essentially driving a lethal weapon. People on bikes don’t intend to make you angry. Sometimes you might get slowed down by a few seconds due to an inconsiderate cyclist. But don’t let that ruin your day or cause you to blow your top and do something you might regret for the rest of your life.

Let’s share the road.
