Long Beach police are investigating a shooting in the North Park area that occurred early Monday morning.

According to police, a 36-year-old Long Beach resident was approached by a man at Azalea Court and National Boulevard on May 27 at 1:15 a.m. Police said that the suspect, described as a black male, pulled out a dark-colored handgun and began shooting.

Police said that the victim fled south on his bicycle on National Boulevard after he felt a wound to his abdomen. Police said the man entered Long Beach Police Department Headquarters for assistance, and Long Beach Fire Department emergency personnel responded to the scene and treated him.

“He was seeking safe haven,” said Lt. Eric Cregeen, a spokesman for the department.

Police said the victim, whose name was not released, suffered three gunshot wounds, one to his right thigh, his right arm and abdomen.

Long Beach EMTs transported the victim to Nassau University Medical Center. On Tuesday, police said the victim’s condition was unknown, though sources said that the man is expected to survive.

The incident immediately sparked a search for the shooter by detectives, and the investigation is ongoing. Police declined to speculate on a motive for the attack, and did not say whether the victim knew his assailant.
