Meal prices increase

At its regular meeting on Jan. 12, the Long Beach Board of Education approved a cost increase for school-provided meals in order to reduce the deficit created by increased food and labor costs.
Breakfast will increase from $1 to $1.25 and a hot breakfast was added at the high school for $1.75. Lunch at the elementary schools will go up from $1.75 to $2.25, and at the middle school and high school from $2 to $2.50. A lunch program similar to the high school’s was implemented at the Nike alternative school.
Superintendent Dr. Robert Greenberg said the increases will have no affect on the free-and-reduced lunch programs. The new prices will go into effect on Feb. 1.

New sign for Lindell

On Tuesday, the school board also gave a thumbs-up to a proposal to replace the original engraved stonework on the facade at Lindell School, which denotes the building as the former junior and senior high school, with new stone that reads “Lindell Elementary School.” The price tag for this work is $59,000 and was not included in the original plan because of concerns with compliance with New York State preservation requirements, according to the district.

Retirement and tenure announcements

At Tuesday’s meeting it was announced that Jeffrey Kupferman, a high school social worker, and Beatrice Volpe, a high school foreign language teacher, will both retire at the end of school year in June. District Clerk Eileen Lilly will also retire at that time. The school board also granted tenure to Middle School special education teacher Kerry McNichols and East School reading teacher Jennifer Solden.
