Lynbrook board talks MTA stores, water hike

Concerns, praise raised at Monday’s meeting

The Lynbrook Village Board updated the community on several projects and initiatives at their board meeting on Monday night.

One of the first topics briefly discussed was the status of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority-owned stores under the Atlantic Avenue railroad trestle, which have been empty for the last 14 years. Last month, the MTA’s Real Estate Department approved a proposal by local developers, Lynbrook Properties Management, to lease and renovate the storefronts there. The lease should be in the developer’s hands by the end of this week, said Mayor Bill Hendrick. He added that both New York State Assemblyman Brian Curran and Senator Dean Skelos, who helped in the effort to find a developer, will most likely sign a joint letter as an addendum to the lease. “… so happy that it will be done,” Hendrick said.

6th Avenue Electronics Sunrise Hwy.site, Capri Hotel

Right now, three parties are interested in developing the site at 831 Sunrise Highway, formerly 6th Avenue Electronics. Hendrick and the village board have been meeting with potential developers, but the meetings are preliminary at this point — but there is valid interest, Hendrick said.

As far as the Capri Motor Inn, officials say that a potential developer for the 6th Avenue Electronics site would want to condemn the old building to make way for a new project that would be beneficial to the community. If that were to happen, the potential developer would have to request for the building’s demolition, Hendrick added. “Development gives spark for other proposals ... people want to get involved.”

Long Island Ameican Water proposed increase met with objections

Village officials are still not completely happy, Hendrick said, though Long Island American Water had proposed an alternative rate increase last week, calling for the implementation of smaller rates over the next three consecutive years, instead of its original 19.5 percent proposed increase.
