A fundraiser for the Sean Finnegan Memorial Scholarship was held on June 26 at South Middle School field, raising more than $1,156 to make a total of $3,500 to go toward next year’s recipients.

“This was phenomenal,” said Sean Finnegan, Sr., who acted as coach for the Lynbrook East Rockaway Soccer team, The Panthers, for 11 years. “It was great to see some of the boys — now men — who were on Sean’s team. Coaching them was such a pleasure.” The Panters played the Gators at the fundraiser.

The Lynbrook/East Rockaway Soccer Club established the scholarship which is awarded to students who have achieved a high level of academic success, and who have consistently demonstrated the honorable values of sportsmanship and fair play in all of their endeavors. Guy Punzi is president of Lynbrook- East Rockaway Soccer Club.

Finnegan’s son, also named Sean, was a 2006 graduate of Chaminade High School who was killed in April in a Pennsylvania car crash. He was on the soccer team for as long as his father was coach.

Students Deanna Perez and Kevin Alonge were the first recipients of the Sean Finnegan Memorial Sportsmanship Scholarship at this year’s Senior Varsity Dinner held in June 7.
