Lynbrook fifth-grader wins postcard contest

Catherine Applebaum, a fifth-grader in Donna Smith’s class at Lynbrook’s West End School, received a third-place award of $250 in the Junior Division of the 2011-2012 Civil War Trust postcard contest sponsored by HISTORY. She also received membership to the Civil War Trust. Her entry, which expressed the theme “Preserving 150 Years of History: 1861-1862, The War Commences,” was judged on creativity, originality and understanding of the American Civil War.

The Civil War Trust is a nonprofit organization devoted to the preservation of our nation’s endangered Civil War battlefields. The trust also promotes educational programs and heritage tourism initiatives to inform the public of the war’s history and the fundamental conflicts that sparked it.
