Lynbrook's school spirit at Class Skit Night

Posted

In a tradition spanning over eight decades, Class Skit Night at Lynbrook High School has become one of the most anticipated and well-attended events of the year. Students worked for weeks to create their own original scripts, costumes, sets and choreography, entertaining family and fellow classmates with their energy, originality and humor.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Wild Things.” The freshman class took the characters from Disney’s Lilo and Stitch on an adventure from their native Hawaii to the streets of New York, where Stitch tried to discover his wild side but ended up realizing the importance of family.

The sophomores did an impressive job of channeling small animal energy in their skit based on the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon series. In their skit, Alvin, Theodore and Simon, who had grown conceited by their fame, were sent back to the wild by their manager David Seville to test their survival skills.

In the juniors’ take on Space Jam, a band of Looney Toons characters went on a space adventure, battling a villain called The Boss and his gang of thugs in a game of pickup basketball to win back the color the boss had stolen from Toon Town.

With Disney’s Lion King as their subject, the seniors finished off the evening in equally wild fashion. Their skit opened in the days before the wedding of Simba and Nala, with a nervous Nala stressing over all the details, while Simba enjoyed the last days of bachelorhood. A wicked act of vandalism before the wedding made Simba and Nala realize that all they really needed on their wedding day was each other.

All the skits were laced with witty puns and clever cultural references to the latest social media trends, technology fads and celebrity sightings. Performances were judged by five separate criteria: skits, scenery, costumes, box and banner. The seniors, who were two-time reigning champs, took first place again this year, with the juniors placing second, sophomores coming in third and freshmen finishing fourth.
