Malverne American Legion salutes vets, gets saluted in return

The Malverne American Legion Post 44 honored veterans on Thursday with a ceremony at the gazebo at the Chester A. Reese Memorial Park in Malverne.

Like people throughout the country on Veterans' Day, Malverne vets — young and old — area residents and children gathered by the memorial plaques surrounding the gazebo to pay tribute to those who served and continue to serve America.

The Post 44 members were themselves honored by local students earlier this week. Fourth-grade students at the Malverne school district's Davison Avenue Intermediary School in Lynbrook invited local veterans and elected officials for a special assembly on Wednesday where they put on with a special choral presentation.

Under the direction of music teacher Deanna Vitola, students sang a medley of patriotic favorites, including “Yankee Doodle Boy,” “America the Beautiful” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” For their finale, they sang “Oh, I Love America,” as they waved paper hearts in the air for their honored guests.

“Welcome to our annual Veterans Day celebration,” said Principal Edward Tallon. “We are lucky to have with us in the audience today Davison Avenue’s former principal Phyllis Wright, who, together with local veteran Frank Zabatta, started this wonderful tradition 17 years ago.”

Peter Zullo, past commander of American Legion Post 44, spoke on behalf of his fellow veterans. “We always look forward to meeting with you,” he told the students. “We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for inviting us here to share in this wonderful celebration.”

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray also paid a visit to present a special citation to the school. At the conclusion of the assembly, the veterans visited classrooms to  share some memories of their experiences in the service.
