Malverne schools celebrate MLK Jr. Day

Posted

The Malverne school district held its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration last week for the 25th consecutive year. It was day of pride and joy, a day when students and community residents united to pay tribute to a man whose dreams are as vivid today as the day he shared them with the nation.

At the celebration, held at the Howard T. Herber Middle School auditorium on Jan. 14, the district honored the late Elizabeth Carol Cherry, an alumna and retired teacher. Cherry later returned to the district as a teacher, where she shared her values as a freedom fighter and knowledge as an educator with the young students of the Maurice W. Downing Primary School for 31 years before retiring in 2006.

Cherry was named Humanitarian of the Year and an award was presented by students to her family members, who accepted it on her behalf.
