Malverne teacher receives national certification

Davison Avenue Intermediate School teacher Janis Romanoff was honored recently receiving the National Board Certification for Literacy. Given by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the certification requires teachers to meet a national standard and is considered a major watermark for all educators.

“It’s a lot of work, but it really makes you think about what you do and look closely at the decisions you make; and it draws attention to how you plan your lessons,” Mrs. Romanoff said of the year-long process which requires educators to submit four twenty-paged portfolios, plus a videotape, in which the applicant analyzes and reflects on his or her teaching .

In addition to the national certification, Romanff was chosen to participate in a national forum at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building at the White House in October. The forum centers around current educational issues, promotes policies for effective teaching, and encouraged participants to become more involved in leadership and policy making within the organization. Romanoff was one of only 100 educators selected to attend and the only educator from Long Island.
