After receiving a tip on Saturday that a man who was wanted for violating his parole had been seen at a house on Oceanside Road, in Oceanside, Nassau County police found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At about 2 p.m. on Saturday, homeowner Avi Wald was napping when his children told him they saw SWAT trucks, detectives and uniformed officers in front of their home. According to Wald, the police told him and his family to remain in the house as they went around the back to enter a basement apartment.

When police entered the apartment, the suspect went into another room, where police found him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wald said he was then told to take his children and leave the house. He sent his family to a neighbor’s house and stood across the street while detectives and the NCPD Homicide Squad continued the investigation.

Oceanside Road was closed for six hours.

“I heard a loud bang,” one unidentified neighbor said. “I thought I heard a bomb.” Wald said that was the sound of a stun grenade that was used in the attempted arrest.

Wald said that police told him the incident was related to an arrest Friday night in Long Beach after a fight at a bar. According to Wald, the man who was arrested told police that his pit bull was at the Oceanside address, and asked them not to hurt the dog. Police did not say how the two men were related. Wald said he was told by the police that the dog was locked in a shed behind the house.

Police had not released the name of the victim as the Herald went to press, and the investigation was continuing. Police asked that anyone with information about the crime call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at (800) 244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
