Man killed in small plane crash

North Bellmore pilot and passengers sustain injuries

A plane piloted by North Bellmore resident Gus Halouvas, 55, crashed Sunday around 9 a.m. in East Farmingdale, Suffolk County Police said. The 1969 Marchetti lost power shortly after takeoff from Republic Airport.

Passenger Ed Cerverizzo, 75, of Garden City was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Massapequa, where he was pronounced dead. Halouvas was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with spinal injuries, passenger William Mancusi, 83, of Brooklyn was taken to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment of facial lacerations, and passenger Charles Bianculli, 61, of Lindenhurst, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was listed in critical condition.

The plane struck four parked cars when it crashed. No one on the street was injured. The Federal Aviation Administration will conduct an investigation into the cause of the crash.
