Man steals money from Girl Scouts

A man stole a cash box from a Girl Scout cookie sale in Rockville Centre, say Nassau County Police.

On March 9 at 5:45 p.m., Michael Avelli, 34, of Deer Park allegedly took a cash box from a cookie sale on North Park Avenue and Front Street. The box contained about $100.

A man with the Girl Scouts chased and grabbed Avelli, who then hit the man's face. Avelli fled the scene with the money.

The man had contusions on his face but refused medical attention. No one else was injured.

Nassau County detectives found Avelli at his home on March 10 and arrested him. He was charged with second-degree robbery and will be arraigned on March 11 at First District Court in Hempstead.
