Man suspected of killing one, injuring another near Roosevelt Field found dead

Nassau County police officials' hunt for an armed man they said shot two people last Wednesday morning in East Garden City, - fatally injuring at least one of the victims, - has ended. Officials reported on Tuesday, Oct. 1 that the suspect's body was recovered upstate. 

Nassau County and Garden City police officers from several commands converged on the south parking area and streets south of the Roosevelt Field Mall in East Garden City in search of Sang Ho Kim, Chief Steven Skrynecki said at an afternoon news conference on Sept. 25. Kim fled upstate, according to police, and after an extensive search through 7,400 acres of Hudson Highlands Park and the surrounding waterways of the Hudson River, Kim's body was found.

Public information officuals with the Nassau County Police Department confimed that fingerprint comparisons have postiviely identified the body recovered in Rockland County is Kim. Officials said he was found near Iona Island and the Bear Mountain Bridge, at about 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.

Officials did not confirm Kim's cause of death. However, they did say they are not seeking additional suspects in the East Garden City homicide investigation.

County Executive Ed Mangano said the suspect was a former vendor of the business in which the shooting took place, Savenergy. Officials confirmed that one victim, - Zachariah Yong Jae Shin, a 25-year-old from Whitestone, - has died. The other victim, Savenergy President John Hyung Choi, was in critical condition as of 1:30 p.m last Wednesday. 

Officials said the men were shot at about 10:10 a.m. in a one-story office building at 645 South Street, southeast of the mall. Kim, a 63-year-old Queens resident, was described to be about 6 ft. to 6 ft., 3 in. tall, possibly Asian and wearing a red shirt and greyish or brownish jacket. Police said he left the scene of the shooting in a white Honda Pilot, possibly a 2007, with a license plate of FMA3648. 

Police said Wednesday afternoon that they were sure that he is "not in the area right now." With help from other agencies, officials tracked down his car, which was found at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night at the Sandy Beach Park parking lot in Philipstown in Putnam County. Public information officers confirmed Thursday morning that Kim was not inside the abandoned vehicle, and helicopters were deployed in the region to locate the suspect. 

Before the car was found upstate, area schools and businesses took various precautionary measures Wednesday morning.
