Manhasset tops Wantagh for title

One week after the Lady Warriors upset the Garden City Trojans; Wantagh lost 15-8 to Manhasset in the Nassau County Class B girls' lacrosse championship at Adelphi University on May 28.

The Indians struck quick and often, as they scored five times in the first four minutes. Two of those goals were by All-American Julia Glynn, who went on to add three more during the game.

“It was hard, but we laid it all on the line,” Wantagh Coach Jaclyn Coyne said. “The girls wore their hearts on their sleeves.”

After falling behind 5-0, Wantagh struck twice to cut the deficit to three. First, Shea Weber found Paige Craig in front to put the Lady Warriors on the board, and then Madison Conway scored her first of three to bring Wantagh closer.

Manhasset responded with five goals in a row. Glynn added her third of the game, followed by a pair of goals from Kathryn Hallett, who also had five goals in the Indians’ win.

One reason for Manhasset’s advantage was their success in the center circle. The Indians controlled most of the draws, which helped them dictate the pace and keep the ball on the Lady Warriors’ side of the field.

Wantagh added one more goal before the half, as Nicole Sliwak was able to beat Erin Coleman to make it 10-3. After two quick Manhasset goals opened the second half, Wantagh responded with three in a row. Two of them came from Conway, and Sliwak added her second. The Lady Warriors trimmed the lead to 12-6, but that’s the closest they would come. Despite two more goals from Craig, Manhasset prevailed 15-8.

“I’m really proud of the way they played,” Coyne said. “They kept fighting and they overcame a lot of hurdles. It just wasn’t our day.”

For Conway, a sophomore attacker, the loss was hard to swallow, but she said that the team learned a lot from the experience and vowed that they’ll contend next season.

“We were incredibly close,” she said. “We will definitely be back.”
