Seaford man arrested for driving with suspended license

A seventh-grade student at Memorial Junior High School died Thursday morning after he was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of West Merrick Road and South Franklin Avenue in Valley Stream, Nassau County Police reported.

The 12-year-old boy was struck by a 2003 GMC Yukon driven by Austin Soldano, 29, of Seaford at 7:17 a.m. The victim was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police said no criminality was involved in the accident, but arrested Soldano for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. He was arraigned the same day at First District Court in Hempstead.

Valley Stream Central High School District Superintendent Bill Heidenreich issued the following statement: “The Valley Stream Central High School District is extremely saddened to learn of the passing of one of its seventh-grade students from Memorial Junior High School earlier this morning, Dec. 11. The school has enacted its crisis plan and grief counselors will be made available to students and staff as long as needed. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the student.”
