Students in the Merrick School District piled out of school buses and their parents’ cars during a short break in a persistent rainstorm for the start of the new academic year on Tuesday, Sept. 6, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of children eager to begin their studies.
The Merrick district comprises Birch, Chatterton and Levy-Lakeside elementary schools. On Thursday, the skies finally cleared after three straight days of rain, and students at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School were able to enjoy their annual welcome-back picnic, complete with popcorn, pretzels, ice cream, and plenty of fun and games.
