Merrick school library gets a modern-day makeover

Posted

Students at Merrick Avenue Middle School can watch virtual reality documentaries, choose from a selection of over one million books to read and print 3-dimensional models of an architecture project. They can do this all in one room: the library.

This past summer the Bellmore-Merrick School District maintenance staff performed renovations to the Merrick Avenue Middle School Library. This included sanding and re-staining the furniture, bringing in new furniture, redecorating the interior, setting up a display case for student artwork and installing new technological features, including iPads, Chromebook laptops, Google Goggles, Kindles, an Interactive SmartBoard, Apple TV and a 3-D Printer. Plans to create a Makerspace, or a community workshop equipped with various intellectual exercises and crafts, are also in the works.

“We can take them on an in-class field trip to a wildlife reserve,” said English Chairperson Adeline Atkins in reference to the Google Goggles, which are virtual reality headsets that allow users to watch panoramic videos.

The library is now divided into two separate sections, one with tables and wooden chairs for a classroom setting and another with couches and a more relaxing set-up. “It was imperative that we remained cognizant of the fact that students learn differently,” said Merrick Avenue Middle School Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson. “The varying spaces support students’ learning styles.”

Atkins said that the library is filled during student’s lunch periods, whether they are hanging out with friends, getting homework done or reading a book. “The space really appeals to a 21st century learner,” she added.

The district is finalizing plans to renovate Kennedy High School and Grand Avenue Middle School libraries with construction expected to begin this summer.
