Merrick students excel in Scrabble at tourney

Posted

Elementary school students from six Merrick and North Merrick schools — Birch, Levy-Lakeside, Chatterton, Old Mill Road, Fayette and the Progressive School of Long Island — recently participated in a Scrabble tournament at the Merrick Library. The tournament is run annually by the Kiwanis Club of Merrick.

Fifty-six students participated in the tournament, which is designed to encourage friendly competitiveness, vocabulary and strategy.

Birch students Jonathan Lloyd and Frank Martin tied for highest single-word point total among sixth graders, with each scoring 66 points on a single turn.

Caitlyn Perrone, also of Birch, received the 6th grade sportsmanship award.
