On September 29 Long Beach celebrates Michael Valente Day, named for the World War I hero and the city’s only recipient of the Medal of Honor. Last year, Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan presented Valente's daughter Josephine Cuneo, with a city proclamation in memory of her father, after the City Council passed a resolution proclaiming Michael Valente Day would be recognized in Long Beach every September. Valente was decorated with the Medal of Honor, the highest award for valor, for his actions on September 29, 1918 against enemy forces during World War I.
