State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages announced the start of the Assembly’s annual Summer Reading Challenge earlier this month, designed to encourage children to continue reading and learning during the summer months.

“The Summer Reading Challenge is a fun, productive way to help foster a love of learning and help our children succeed in school,” Solages said, pointing out that reading during the summer months has been shown to help keep students engaged with education while school is out. “The Summer Reading Challenge is a fantastic way to encourage kids to pick up a book, and strengthen their learning skills for the coming year.”

While the program officially kicked off at the beginning of July, students and their families can still join by contacting Solages’s office.

To participate, children must read by themselves or with a partner for at least 15 minutes for a total of 40 days throughout the months of July and August. Logs of the reading time can be marked off on the brochure’s attached calendar, and submitted back to the office after the program ends. Each child who completes the challenge will be awarded an Excellence in Reading certificate from the Assembly.
