Movement to rename Lawrence Middle School for fallen fiefighter

Petition to name school for Joseph Sanford Jr.

Posted

As seen on Avi Fertig's Twitter feed a petition has been started to rename Lawrence Middle School for Inwood volunteer firefighter Joseph Sanford Jr., who died on Dec. 23 due to injuries suffered in a fall when responding to a Woodmere house fire on Dec. 19.

The middle school is in the process of being renamed because of the restructuring plan the Lawrence School District is implementing for next school year, where a lower school and an upper school will be created in the same building. Grades three, four five will comprise the lower school and grades six, seven and eight will make up the upper school.

Sanford, a 17-year veteran of the fire department was one of the first to respond to the fire at the Central Avenue home near 4 a.m., and fell through the first floor to the basement of the house which was being renovated.

Fertig, a Woodmere resident, is a special assistant to the Town of Hempstead's council and ran for assembly this past November losing to Todd Kaminsky.

"To re-name the Lawrence Middle School, the Joseph Sanford Jr. School, is a unique opportunity for our community to honor a man who is deserving like no other. It is our opportunity to combine the sacred ideals of public education and public service in a way that would have made Joe proud," it reads on the petition site.
