More than 200 students, parents and friends turned out for the NAACP education rally held at City Hall on Oct. 2 to honor academic achievers of African American decent.

The rally was scheduled to be held outside at Kennedy Plaza, but the rain forced the crowd to the sixth floor, where more than 150 students in the Long Beach School District were given certificates for their success during the previous school year.

Local NAACP secretary Judy Murdaugh-Jackson said the back-to-school rally is held every year and honors students from each of the district’s six schools.

“The school principals and faculty, they were very supportive in helping us reach our goals,” Vice President Sandra Patrick said of the district. She noted that they were overwhelmed with the amount of parents that attended to support their children. “We were very pleased with the outcome,” she said.
