Nassau County Court Judge Robert H. Spergel dead at 55

Judge Robert H. Spergel was at one time a New York City Detective who worked the narcotics and organized crime divisions. At the time of his death on Feb. 7, he was a Nassau County District Court judge assigned to the driving while intoxicated criminal part. There he presided over cases involving DWI and driving under the influence of drugs. He handled well over 1000 cases and has presided over approximately 50 jury trials.

Spergel earned a law degree from the City University of New York School of Law and was admitted to the bar in 1996.

Before becoming a judge he was a lawyer in private practice, focusing primarily on federal litigation involving employment discrimination and sexual harassment.

Over the past 15 years he was a support group leader for parents of chronically ill children for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of American (CCFA), Long Island Chapter, as well as serving as a member of the Board Of Trustees for CCFA.

Judge Spergel died at 55, after a four-year battle with a brain tumor. He is survived his wife, Mindy, parents, Esther and Allen of Florida; brother, Michael, of Virginia; son, Craig, of Florida; and daughter, Ilyssa, of Oceanside.
