People outside of Island Park may not have known Anthony D’Esposito prior to his appointment as the councilman for the 4th district of the Town of Hempstead, but he is working hard to change that.

Visiting civic groups throughout the district the New York City detective and former Island Park Fire Chief has been introducing himself and learning about his constituents needs.

Although most of the members attending the Mar. 3 meeting of the Island Park Chamber knew him, D’Esposito talked about how, in his new position, he could help his Hurricane Sandy ravaged home, by cleaning and fixing streets, improving drainage to help prevent future flooding, citing businesses that disregard their building’s appearance and addressing enforcement of local laws.

“I am looking forward to assisting [Island Park] businesses. I will be looking to see if there are is Community Development Block Grant money that the Town of Hempstead could use for rebuilding and repairs here.”

After a brief introduction at the Mar. 17 meeting of the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce D’Esposito told members, “I am working on getting grants to help fix Oceanside streets, placing news garbage pails around and adding new flower pots [for the summer months] to make the area more attractive.” He asked the members to make sure businesses did not use the new garbage receptacles for their business refuse. D’Esposito said he is working on getting the guardrail at the intersection of Lawson and Daly Boulevards repaired.

He heard from members about the need for a various changes in traffic lights, finding a new boat for the Oceanside Lighthouse landmark, concerns about the new Costco being built in Oceanside, and vacant business buildings.

D’Esposito explained that the Town of Hempstead is the largest town in the U.S., and while “The fourth district is big, it is one of many and I want to make sure it does not get lost in the mix.”
