Long Beach resident makes waves on kids’ channel

The next potential Nickelodeon teen superstar hails from Long Beach. Alexandra Brodsky, 14, has been making a name for herself on the children’s channel since she was 11, when she played the role of David Wolff’s girlfriend on the hit tween show the Naked Brothers Band.

A natural entertainer, Alexandra began signing and playing the piano at 4, and quickly began modeling and acting for print advertising and commercials. A big break almost came when she auditioned for a role in the Broadway show "The Lion King," but missed the cut.

“You have to be right what they want,” said the bubbly and fashionable teen. “[I’ve had] a lot of disappointments, but they’ve turned out to be experiences.”

A gig that wasn’t a let down was playing alongside musician and activist Wyclef Jean and pop music artist Colbie Caillat for the first Nickelodeon Mega Music Fest, which will air at summer's end.

Taped last week at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Opera House in front 1,000 celebrities, Alexandra walked the “orange carpet” and mingled with the stars of Modern Family and Yo Gabba Gabba!

With musical instruments peppered around the Brodsky home on West Broadway, Alexandra’s mother, Julie Brodsky, said music is in the genes of both her children. Alexandra and her older brother, Jordan, both taught themselves how to play guitar and piano with minimal lessons.

Asked if she had a musical background, Brodsky said her family in Puerto Rico loves music and own instruments they can’t even play. She confessed that while she knows how to play the guitar, it isn’t at the caliber of her daughter. “I was just the person [the talent] skipped,” she laughed.

Alexandra, who also has a deep interest in astronomy, has focused on her music, often playing selections by her idol, Lady Gaga, and writing her own music. The extroverted teen was brave enough to pass on a CD with her music to Jean and Caillat after their performance together.

Using social media to her advantage, Alexandra created a You Tube channel, aStarrToWishOn, to showcase her talent.

“She’s a true musician,” Brodsky said of her daughter. “She has a dream and she’s really going for it.”

Brodsky hasn’t given up acting completely and will but heard – but not seen – as the voice of Dora the Explorer’s friend, Alana, in a new game featuring electronic dolls. Alana, who unlike Alexandra is a soccer player, will also be featured in upcoming episodes of the show.

The eighth-grader at Long Beach Middle School said that following her dream has caused her to miss school and kept her from making tight connections with other girls her age. But, Brodsky said that while she may miss hanging out with her friends, she is willing to sacrifice a social life to follow her passions.

“I want to be a role model for people who want to achieve their dreams, but sometimes they feel they can’t because they have no way,” said Alexandra, who believes the kids in her neighborhood look up to her.

Brodsky said the constant time with her daughter has created a strong bond. “I’ll sacrifice anything to see her perusing her dream,” she said. “She makes me very proud and very happy. We’re best friends.”
