Nicolosi is the choice in the 21st Assembly District

Replacing popular state Assemblyman Thomas Alfano in the 21st District will be no small feat. Alfano has been highly visible in the community for the past 15 years, and has always taken the time to listen to his constituents.

With his departure, this year’s race features political newcomers Pat Nicolosi, a Democrat from Elmont, and Ed Ra, a Republican from Franklin Square. The Herald believes Nicolosi is the best candidate to replace Alfano.

Nicolosi, 54, has lived in Elmont for more than three decades and knows the community as well as anyone, having served as president of the Elmont Civic Association for many years. He also sits on the Elmont Library Board of Trustees, is a member of Residents for Efficient Special Districts and has been a PTA leader in the schools.

His service to the community makes him a good candidate at both the local and state level. Nicolosi knows the concerns of the constituents of the 21st District and is willing to fight on their behalf in Albany. But he also works well with others, as demonstrated by his relationship with Alfano, a Republican, and would cross the aisle to do what is best for residents.

Nicolosi has a vision for the underutilized Belmont Park, a 430-acre facility in the west end of Elmont. His plan would stimulate the local economy, bring jobs and tax dollars into the community and enhance Long Island as a tourist destination. There’s been a lot of talk about revitalizing Belmont, but little action. We encourage Nicolosi to stick to his plan and make it a reality.

Ra, 28, has a strong understanding of the issues affecting his generation, including a lack of affordable housing and long-term job prospects in New York. But understanding doesn’t compete with the leadership Nicolosi has demonstrated in his many years as a civic leader and community activist. We encourage Ra, a town attorney, to take on more leadership roles in his community.

The Herald endorses Nicolosi. We have no doubt that he will continue to be the outspoken voice that the people of Elmont, Franklin Square, Malverne, West Hempstead and North Valley Stream need.
