North High School had its homecoming game at John Miele Memorial Field on Oct. 17, taking on the Hewlett High School Bulldogs.

The Spartans were defeated 28-7, but school spirit was nevertheless high after the students’ pep rally the day before. Vincent Russo and Nia Brockington were crowned king and queen, and a dance followed the rally.

At the game’s halftime, the cheerleaders, kickline team and marching band put on a show, and the school’s two-week Coaches vs. Cancer initiative was announced. The school has raised $1,400 for cancer research through athletic events and has three more scheduled in coming weeks. During halftime, 187 seconds were placed on the clock to represent the 187 people who are diagnosed each hour, and cheerleaders and kickline members sold as many bracelets as they could.

A parade of banners created by the different grades and student organizations preceded the game. Each banner’s “decades” theme was judged. The junior class won first place, and the ninth and eighth grades took second and third.

South High School held its homecoming game on Oct. 24. Its classes and clubs paraded around the school’s track with banners as the marching band played. Brian Morales and Bobbi Brivia donned their crowns as homecoming king and queen.

Resident Bill Benson received a proclamation from the Village of Valley Stream for his adamant support of the school and its students. The recognition was followed by performances by the color guard, cheerleaders, kickline team, step squad and marching band.

The Falcons fell to the Mineola Mustangs.
