Oceanside man arrested and charged with assault

Police have arrested James Lampp, 17, of Oceanside and charged him with assault in connection with an incident that occurred at 9:20 p.m. on April 4.

According to police, Lampp, who was driving his 2009 Chevrolet, became involved in a verbal dispute with a man, 16, at the intersection of Anchor and Messick avenues in Oceanside.

Police said Lampp drove down Anchor Avenue, then made a U-turn back to where the victim and his friends were standing, got out of his car and ran toward the victim with a 17-inch metal pipe. Police said Lammp struck the victim with the pipe several times, knocking him to the ground, then continued to hit him on the head and back. He also bit the victim's thumb, causing a two-inch laceration. The victim, who sustained multiple contusions, was treated at South Nassau Communities Hospital.

Lampp was arrested by police soon after the incident and charged with second-degree assault and criminal possession of a dangerous weapon.

He was scheduled for arraignment at First District Court in Hempstead April 5.
