Spirited competition

Oceanside Middle School gets some spirit

Students kickoff Teen Spirit week

If the energy of Team Spirit at Oceanside Middle School could be captured in a container, the energy crisis would be solved.

Team Spirit is an annual event that fosters school spirit and teamwork. Additionally, through fundraising for charities that students select, the event teaches students that they can make a difference in the world.

It begins with a spirited assembly in the auditorium, featuring costumes, music, dancing, performances, quiz shows and lots of cheering. This year’s theme was music, so staff decked themselves out in costume to represent various genres and eras. Principal Alison Glickman-Rogers dressed as a marching band majorette, Assistant Principal Christina Sapienza as a disco queen and math teacher John Heron as a country music cowboy.

The Team Spirit kickoff is followed by a week of silly fun (dress like the 1980s), friendly competition (sports day), and various fundraising efforts.

Teacher Nancy Morris, the emcee and one of the event’s organizers, reminded the students that even though Team Spirit is competitive, the competition is all in fun.

“Remember that we’re one school, and we all support each other,” she said.  From the sound of the cheering, it seemed the students had gotten the message.
