Oceanside Garden Club Meeting

The Oceanside Garden Club will welcome staff from Trader Joe’s to the library at 7 p.m. on March 9 to offer advice on how to buy the best and most nutritious organic foods.


Discovering the Writer Within
Barbara Novak, an award-winning writer and member of the English Department at Molloy College will host this class to help writers enhance their skills at 7 p.m. on March 10. Special guest Sally Wendkos Olds will also present her non-fiction book “Super Granny.”


Art Lecture: The Art of Andrew Wyeth
Louise Cella Caruso will host this series highlighting the life and work of “America’s Painter,” realist and abstract artist Andrew Wyeth. Caruso will examine some of the artist’s favorite female subjects, including Christina Olson and Helga Testorf. The lecture will begin at 2 p.m. on March 11.


Understanding Your Hearing Loss and What We Can Do About It
The Hearing Loss Association of America, South Nassau Chapter, will present this free event at the library at 7:30 on March 11. For more information, call 763-7444.


Dynamic Diva Series: Shelley Shields’ Celtic Cabaret
Vocalist and pianist Shelley Shields will perform a musical selection inspired by the green fields and rolling hills of the Emerald Isle. Tickets, which are limited to two per person, will be distributed at the information desk beginning March 7 to Oceanside School District residents and March 10 to non-residents, if available. The event will take place at 2 p.m. on March 14.


“Rome Around Italy”
Photographer and Oceanside resident Dr. Jeffrey Herzlich debuts his panoramic photography exhibit at the Oceanside Library now through March 14. In this exhibit, Herzlich details the flow of life through Rome, Italy, using oversized panoramas highlighting the extensive structure, form, and beauty of ancient Italian piazzas, with modern-day people, ranging from citizens to tourists, all passing casually through them.

Island Park Adult Book Club
The book club will discuss the historical fiction novel “Sex Wars,” by Marge Piercy, at 7 p.m. on March 15.


Spring Wreath
Create a spring wreath for your front door to brighten the winter blues at 6:30 p.m. on March 23. Starting with a grapevine wreath and using colorful wired ribbons, spring-colored silk flowers and greenery of your choosing, you can create a unique design all your own. Please bring a wire cutter and a glue gun to class. There is a $20 fee for materials.


Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Volunteers from the Hofstra University Tax Society will prepare 2009 income tax returns at the library free of charge from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on saturdays in March. All tax returns will be filed electronically. Bring copies of last year’s federal and state tax returns, all 1099 and W-2 forms and property tax bills. Make your appointment at the circulation desk.

Fighters Make Miracles: A Fundraiser for Colleen Grasing
The Knights of Columbus in Oceanside, 2985 Kenneth Place, is hosting a fundraiser for Colleen Grasing from 1-5 p.m. on March 7. Colleen suffered from a brain aneurysm last year, and the benefit is to help raise money for her medical expenses. Tickets are $50 per person and include food, beer, wine, soda and entertainment. Ecumenical Evening Lenten Worship
Oceanside Lutheran Church, 62 Davison Avenue, the First United Methodist Church, 2915 Davison Street, and the First Presbyterian Church, 2701 Oceanside Road, will be joining forces once again to host a series of Sunday Evening Lenten Worship Services. Services begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed by a soup supper. Services will be hosted by the Oceanside Lutheran Church on March 7, the First United Methodist Church on March 14, and the First Presbyterian Church on March 21. On Broadway - A Musical Revue!
The Island Park Theatre Group, in concert with the Island Park Schools Recreation Department, will proudly present “On Broadway - A Musical Revue!” featuring local talent of all ages and from all communities. Performances will be at 3 p.m. on March 14, and 8 p.m. on March 19 and 20, and 3 p.m. on March 21 at Lincoln-Orens Middle School, 150 Trafalgar Boulevard. Tickets are $18 per person. Oceanside Concert Series
The First Presbyterian Church of Oceanside, 2701 Oceanside Road, will hold a concert at 7 p.m. on March 14. The show will feature local and Broadway performers, including Erick Devine from “Seussical,” “Ragtime,” and “Cats,” and Scott Barnhardt, from the Tony award-winning show “Big River.” Performers will be accompanied by host Donny Jones on piano. Purim Ball Benefit
Join us for an elegant evening of dining and dancing at 7 p.m. on March 13. The Purim Ball will honor the following individuals for their generous contributions to the community: Linda Friedman of Oceanside, Elle and Hy Kapito of Baldwin Harbor, Bari Lebowitz of Long Beach, Jill Levine of Merrick, and Caryn Pilnick of Bellmore. The sophistication of Cole Porter made its way to the silver screen, either through successful Broadway show adaptations like “Anything Goes,” “Kiss Me Kate” and “Silk Stockings,” or through original film scores from musicals like “Rosalie,” “Born to Dance,” “You’ll Never Get Rich,” and “High Society.” Film Historian Phil Harwood will present an overview of Cole Porter and his impact on Hollywood musicals at 2 p.m. on March 17.
